Really annoyed with myself for the wiring error, time for beer.Kawasaki KMX125 KMX 125 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 Workshop Service Repair Manual So another CDI ordered, more waiting and maybe one day this thread might be useful to someone. Now I know that the pulse coil only gives about a volt and the exciter was kicking a healthy 60V+ on kickover. (It's a home made short loom, all on bullet connectors) I have a feeling this could have been my fault, I mistook the white wire for one of the white and striped wires when I first connected it up, didn't really think anything of it at the time, as the coil resistances are about the same. So another brew and some more head scratching.Īnyway, I found a resistance table in my Haynes manual for the CDI, it's the only thing left.Īccording to the multimeter pretty much everything is OC except the red / white wire, which is shorted to ground, looks like the CDI is goosed. Only thing that confuses me about it is it goes through a diode, but since my KX has none of these switches I figured I don't need it, so it's not connected. So double checking everything, all ignition wired up correct except the brown / white wire, which goes to the clutch switch, run stop and stand, so it's effectively a kill switch. Still have an intermittent spark! It seems to spark ok if I kick it over slowly, if I kick it over quickly the spark disappears altogether, as a sanity check I put the plug on the lawnmower (Obviously not in it) and it sparks great every time, so the plugs ok (I have seen spark plugs go bad resulting in failure to start / intermittent spark, but that was years ago, LRP didn't seem to agree with NGK spark plugs when it first came out.) The CDI has only two inputs, pulse coil and exciter coil, nothing from the battery or generator.Ĭhanged pulse coil and stator, checked output voltage, all looks good. I'll have to get my multimeter out and measure some voltages, see if the exciters sending enough juice to the CDI, looks like it should be somewhere in the region of 40 - 80 volts AC with a good kick.Īnd in response to SmokinJoe90, I know, but the charging side of the stator has nothing to do with the ignition according to the wiring diagram, it's basically just disconnected at the moment (And I intend it to stay that way). stator resistance seems fine, it matches the other one I have too, can it be bad but read ok for resistance? I know temperature etc can affect them, but this thing hasn't even fired.

In my google based research I've read about people thinking they have an intermittent spark and eventually finding the issue wasn't the spark at all, so I guess it makes sense to stick the tank back on it and kick it over, see if it does anything, then proceed to stator replacement if it's a no go. The stator measures about 120 ohms, i have another stator and another pickup coil, I already swapped the pickup (Easy to get to, so seemed like a logical place to start), so next is the stator. It's strange really, it'll spark 3 or 4 times in a row then miss the next 10, or at least it seems to. I got the coil today and hooked it up, the spark is much brighter! But still seems intermittent. Ok, I was hoping this was going to be a fix report. Just wondered if anyone else has seen a similar issue and what the cause was.?

I have another stator and pulse coil, next thing will be to fit that - but the resistance is the same.
